What is ethnic rhinoplasty?

Ethnic rhinoplasty is not a single technique — it is a philosophy. It describes rhinoplasty performed with an explicit commitment to understanding and respecting the patient's ethnic heritage, preserving the features that define their identity, and enhancing their appearance within the context of their own facial structure rather than against an external standard.

The problem with a single standard of beauty

For much of rhinoplasty's history, the aesthetic ideal was based on a narrow Eurocentric standard — a specific nasal profile, tip projection, and bridge height that reflected the anatomy of one ethnic group. Patients from other backgrounds were often operated on to conform to this standard, with results that looked unnatural and erased rather than enhanced their features.

Modern rhinoplasty has moved decisively away from this approach. The goal is now to understand what is beautiful within the context of the patient's own ethnicity and facial structure — and to achieve that, not to impose something external.

Anatomical considerations

Nasal anatomy varies significantly across ethnic groups. Some of the most important differences include:

  • Skin thickness: Patients of South Asian, East Asian, African, and Latin American heritage often have thicker nasal skin, which affects how much tip definition is achievable and how long swelling takes to resolve
  • Cartilage strength: Cartilage characteristics vary and influence the techniques used for tip refinement and structural support
  • Bridge anatomy: Some patients seek augmentation of a flat bridge; others seek reduction of a prominent hump — the approach differs significantly
  • Nostril shape: Nostril refinement (alar base reduction) is more commonly requested in some ethnic backgrounds and requires careful attention to preserve natural proportions

Dr. Buonassisi's approach

Vancouver's multicultural population means Dr. Buonassisi regularly performs rhinoplasty for patients of diverse ethnic backgrounds. He approaches each case with individual attention to the patient's anatomy, their specific aesthetic goals, and their cultural identity. Computer imaging is used at the consultation to ensure the planned result aligns with the patient's vision before any surgical planning proceeds.
